Using improper fishing tackle for carp could be expensive and time consuming. It is very important to have the best fishing tackle suited for an angler’s fishing needs. Aside from that, it is also essential to find the most affordable and suitable bait for the carp. Thus, good carp fishing tackle plus appealing boilies, equals more catching carp!

There are two basic types of carp fishing tackle. The first type is the rod and reel. The rod is usually 10 to 13 feet long and is made up of tubular carbon fiber. The reel is affixed close to the end of the rod. The reel holds a long length of line which runs up to the other end of the rod through eyelets. The line is retrieved by turning the handle on the reel. On the other hand, the other type of fishing tackle is the pole. Contrary to the first type, the pole has no reel. The line is just attached on the end of the pole.

To maximize the feeding responses of carp, it is necessary to find highly palatable bait to the carps. Boilies are cooked bait which is widely used by carp anglers nowadays. There are commercially available boilies, however, home-made boilies are easy to make and much more affordable. Here are two recipes of sweet home-made boilies to use with any of your finest carp fishing tackle.

Sweet Cornmeal Bait

Combine 12oz. or 375ml of cornmeal with 4 oz. of brown sugar in a large bowl.

Add 3 large eggs and 2 oz of cooking oil into the mixture.

Keep on stirring until the mixture becomes a thick paste.

Add a few drops of red food color to make it attractive to the carp when you cast it into the water.

Get a small amount of paste and roll it in your palms. You can put some cooking oil in your palms prior to rolling to prevent the paste from sticking to your hands. You can base the size of the ball on the size of the carp that you want to catch. However, the general size of uncooked bait is 2-3cm (1 to 1.5 inches)..

Boil the balls in water for 2-3 minutes. The boiling makes the balls larger by about 30%. Do not undercook the balls for they might turn out to be too soft and won’t attach to your carp fishing tackle.

After boiling, take the balls out of the water using a metal strainer. Then place the boilies on a paper towel for initial drying. Let the boilies cool for a few minutes. When the temperature is low enough for you to hold them, transfer them into a drying rack and set aside for 5-6 hours. After drying, place them in a bag and put them inside the freezer until the time you need them.

Sweet Millet Bait

Mix the following dry ingredients together:

3 cups hulled millet,

1 cup wheat bran,

cup soy meal,

1 1/3 cup flour.

In a sauce pan, heat 4oz of Karo syrup (or other corn syrup) together with 4 oz of maple syrup for 3 minutes. Set aside for 5 hours.

Mix dry ingredients with the syrup mixture.

Form into balls and boil for 2-3 minutes. Follow step 6 of the Sweet Cornmeal Bait recipe.

Most of all, don’t forget the two secrets to pinning down the hard to catch carp – find the best carp fishing tackle that suits your budget and prepare good home-made boilies!
